Imagine the maternity ward was being separated only by a curtain from the main female admission ward and by just a door from the male ward, this made a lot of women to avoid giving birth at the health facility because of lack of privacy” were the words Her Royal Highness, Chieftainess Mwape shared with attendees at the launch of the newest maternity ward in her area on Wednesday.

The funding for this crucial project was provided by the Community Forest Management Group, utilizing funds from the last carbon payout. Recognizing the challenges faced by expectant mothers during childbirth due to inadequate facilities, the Community Forest Management Group made the commendable decision to invest these funds into constructing the maternity annex, aiming to address the issue of privacy and improve maternal healthcare in the area.

COMACO Cooperatives Recognized for Gender Inclusion

Last month, two COMACO cooperatives were awarded the first and third prizes in the competition that was organized under the GIZ project ‘’Green Innovation Centers for the Agriculture and Food Sector in Zambia.” The competition evaluated women involvement in boosting the incomes of small-scale farmers, creating employment opportunities, and increasing local food supply.

From the three prizes that were awarded by GIZ, Chikuwe cooperative under Mfuwe region scooped the first prize that included a full solar kit installed at their storage facility, a wifi router with 500GB of data, 100 smart phones and digital training. The third prize was scooped by Kucweni cooperative of Mshawa chiefdom, which was awarded 50 smart phones, a wifi router with 500GB of data and digital training. The two cooperatives were scored on the following criteria: leadership, financial management, business, bookkeeping, records management and women’s role in leadership roles.

Chikuwe business manager Genevive Kamanga called on women and young people to position themselves and take up leadership roles as the future of developing rural communities lies in their hands. “Our cooperative’s goal is to involve more women and youth, which are key for the positive transformation of our communities”.

November 21st – 24th was a momentous occasion fo

November 21st – 24th was a momentous occasion for conservation in Zambia, as 9 chiefs from Mumbwa and Itezhi-tezhi districts, accompanied by local government officials and headed by Mumbwa District Commissioner, traveled to Eastern Province on an exchange visit. Their mission was to learn from experiences by their counterpart chiefs in Eastern Province to formulate effective measures and regulations to safeguard their threatened natural resources and devise strategies for restoring their local forests. Hosted by COMACO and the Forestry Department, the chiefs had the opportunity to tour the It’s Wild! production plant and engage with local chiefs, Chanje and Chikomeni, as well as Chikuwe Cooperative leaders to learn how carbon funds were used to support community needs and forest management. The final day of the visit was a closed-door session in which the chiefs consulted among themselves and drafted a document titled the "The Alliance for Traditional Leadership in the Preservation of Natural Resources by Traditional Chiefs in Mumbwa and Itezhi-tezhi Districts, Central Province, Zambia”. The document laid down the framework for mutually agreed regulations to govern their entire collective landscape for land and forest protection with a commitment to enforce such regulations as allowed in the Forestry Act. Among other decisions, it also laid down the necessary commitment to sustainable farming practices that will help reduce pressure on forest resources and the need to rely on charcoal or timber-cutting to sustain families’ livelihoods.

COMACO, in collaboration with our partners at World Agroforestry - ICRAF, have embarked on a mission to sensitize and empower these communities by promoting the cultivation of indigenous fruit trees.

The initiative aims to introduce and educate rural communities about the practice of growing indigenous fruit trees. These trees, which include Musuku, Tamarind, Baobab, and many more, offer a multitude of benefits that extend beyond just their delicious fruits. Beyond nutrition, the cultivation of indigenous fruit trees offers a sustainable source of income for these communities.
